Minutes of June 11 meeting and announcement of July 9 meeting of Regional National Cemetery Improvement Corporation

REGIONAL NATIONAL CEMETERY IMPROVEMENT CORPORATION
P.O. BOX 4221
FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS 72702
Minutes from the JUNE 11, 2011 Meeting
The meeting was called to order at 10:30 a.m. by President Ron Butler. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Harold Crivello offered the prayer. Minutes of the May meeting were approved. The May 31 treasurer’s report was approved with an ending balance of $64,547.33. There were 11 members present.
WEB SITE
Jake Lamkins reported that there were 46 hits to the web site since last month with a total of 273 page visits.
5K RACE
Wes Stites reported that the final draft of the 5K Race brochure is being prepared. Wes will be able to get the brochure printed at no charge.
OLD BUSINESS
Ron read a letter from Mr. Bartholomew’s attorney stating that there will be an application to rezone the sale barn property from light industrial/heavy commercial to Community Services on June 27, 2011, at 5:30. Ron will check this out further.
Ron also read a letter stating that the “National Medal of Honor Day” will be held annually on March 25. Clarence Craft is the only Medal of Honor recipient currently buried at the Fayetteville National Cemetery.
A newspaper article, “Taking the Beach” by Budd Saunders was acknowledged.
Information on a Great American Hero’s of Arkansas parade scheduled for Saturday, July 2, 2011, in Fayetteville was given with written details to be emailed by the secretary.
PROPERTY STATUS
The contract for the purchase of Lot #15 (Wilson) was signed on June 3, 2011, for a cash purchase price of $59,500 plus a $5,000 in-kind donation. The current renters have been given 60 days to vacate from the June 3 signing date.
Lot #17 (Mahler) has been cleared and is looking good.
Lots #20 and #20A will be our next target purchases. Ron will call the family representative approximately once a month to keep them posted on our status for purchase.
FUND RAISING
A chairperson is needed to take responsibility for Fund Raising Projects. This will be tabled for the July meeting. It was discussed that Fund Raising would need to work closely with Publicity.
PUBLICITY
Merle Williams, Chairman of Publicity, presented his three principles for publicity. They are: (1) To inform the public that the FNC is a historical landmark. (2) Without the work of the RNCIC with its land donations since 1986, the FNC would be closed today. (3) Request donations by reinforcing that the contributions are fully tax deductible, and that 100% of the money goes for purchasing land. Merle suggested developing a 20/25 minute power point presentation that could be used when addressing groups. Establishing annual donors, whether groups or individuals, would be most desirable.
FACEBOOK
Jeremy Johns gave a detailed presentation on how to sign up for Facebook for those not currently using the computer feature. The RNCIC Facebook is referenced to the RNCIC web site.
BY-LAWS
Jake reviewed the suggested changes to the RNCIC By-Laws and will email copies to the members present at this meeting for their final review. If there are no other changes the General Membership will be notified in writing by email of a special meeting called for July 9, 2011, to vote on the amended By-Laws. A new member letter will follow after this process.
IRS FORM 990-N AND FISCAL AUDIT
Harold will work on the IRS form 990-N. The audit was completed by Bruce Richardson, Treasurer of United Lutheran Church, Bella Vista, and by Wes Stites.
RNCIC HISTORY
Ron reported that with his visit to the Washington Co. Assessor’s Office he was able to obtain the lots, sellers, and prices paid on the 21 and soon to be 22 properties that the RNCIC has secured for the FNC. It was agreed that the number of properties acquired should be included on the updated brochure.
ACTION ITEMS
“Action Items” introduced by Ron Butler will be further discussed and implemented at the July meeting.
NEW BUSINESS
No new business was brought forth at this time.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:40 a.m. If members have any items to be discussed at the July meeting, please notify Ron Butler so they may be placed on the next meeting’s agenda.
THE NEXT MEETING WILL BE JULY 9, 2011, 10:30 A.M. AT THE AMERICAN LEGION POST 27, 1195 SO. CURTIS AVE., FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS.

Soldiers and politicians: Who serves and who tries to 'service' the people

A SOLDIER DIED TODAY--anon.

He was getting old  and paunchy
And his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the  Legion,
Telling stories of the past.

Of a war that he once fought  in
And the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his  buddies;
They were heroes, every one.

And 'tho sometimes to his  neighbors
His tales became a joke,
All his buddies listened  quietly
For they knew whereof he spoke.

But we'll hear  his tales no longer,
For old Mike has passed away,
And the world's a  little poorer
For a Soldier died today.

He won’t be mourned by  many,
Just his children and his wife.
For he lived an ordinary,
Very  quiet sort of life.

He held a job and raised a family,
Going quietly  on his way;
And the world won't note his passing,
'Tho a Soldier died  today.

When politicians leave this earth,
Their bodies lie in  state,
While thousands note their passing,
And proclaim that they were  great.

Papers tell of their life stories
From the time that they were  young
But the passing of a Soldier
Goes unnoticed, and unsung.

Is  the greatest contribution
To the welfare of our land,
Someone who breaks  his promise
And cons his fellow man?

Or the ordinary fellow
Who in  times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his country
And offers up his  life?

The politician's stipend
And the style in which he lives,
Are  often disproportionate,
To the service that he gives.

While the  ordinary Soldier,
Who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal
And  perhaps a pension, small.

It is not the politicians
With their  compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom
That our country now  enjoys.

Should you find yourself in danger,
With your enemies at  hand,
Would you really want some cop-out,
With his ever waffling  stand?

Or would you want a Soldier--
His home, his country, his  kin,
Just a common Soldier,
Who would fight until the end?

He was  just a common Soldier,
And his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence  should remind us
We may need his like again.

For when countries are in  conflict,
We find the Soldier's part
Is to clean up all the  troubles
That the politicians start.

If we cannot do him  honor
While he's here to hear the praise,
Then at least let's give him  homage
At the ending of his days.

Perhaps just a simple headline
In  the paper that might say:
"OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING,
A SOLDIER DIED  TODAY."

Chance to visit with potential supporters of expansion of National Cemetery on holiday weekend

Hi All - Some time ago (March) I suggested that the RNCIC rent a table for the gun shows in the area, as a place to pass out literature and seek donations. Many of the attendees are ex-military, & good ole boys', the kind of patriotic folks that we need to reach. Yesterday I received a publication, listing a Show at the Springdale Convention Center on 2 & 3 July. I called the point of contact & received the following information:  The RNCIC is now on their list for a table (for both days)- the cost of which is zero, as long as we're not selling anything. (I told the lady that we're not selling, we're begging.)The set-up is Friday (1 July) from 12:00 to 8 PM.We should man the table from 0900 on Saturday 2 July, till 5 PM;on Sunday we should be there from 0900 till 4 PM.If possible, I'd like to have 3 people volunteer on Sat (9 to 12 & 12 to 5),and the same on Sunday (9 to 12 & 12 to 4).(I will be there anyway, so 3 volunteers will be enough each day)We should have a 'bunch' of brochures; perhaps a couple hundred? Also. any other items, such as photographs, news clippings, etc, items that reflect what we're doing.I have a couple boxes from Roger that have some stuff in them, & I'll see Gloria/Cris tomorrow to see if they have some items.    Will we make any money? I certainly don't know, but at least we can try, and the expenses will be minimal (your time). The publicity certainly can't hurt (and, yes, we should be prepared to accept cash donations, so we need to have some of the tax deduction forms (perhaps 25 or so?).If you'd like to volunteer for one or more periods, just let me know & I'll set it up. Call 479 750-2598 or 445-8336.Thanks,Ron

Memorial Day 2011
Hello to everyone, this is your reminder of the duties of Memorial Day.
This Saturday morning the 28 May we will meet at the National Cemetery in Fayetteville at 7 AM. We will install the large flags around the Avenue of flags. There has been an Eagle scout who made project of making all the receptacle’s able to receive a flagpole without a fight. I believe we will be able to to have all the flags up by eight o’clock. Mrs. Barbara Pixley will have hot dogs cooked up and Larry Nixon is going to bring a couple of tables and his turkey fryer and we will keep them hot in water. The only thing that is needed will be”ICE”,everyone bring a bag, Barbara has arranged for all condiments, bread, water, soda pops. They think the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and interested parties will be finishing the declaration of tombstones by 9:30 AM. That hour and a half would give us plenty of time to prepare and be ready to feed the volunteers. This would complete our duties until Monday morning.
Monday morning 30 May
The motorcycles will meet around the circle at the VA hospital by 8 AM. We will pick up newspapers and possibly small American flags at volunteer services, then assemble in the main waiting room of building one and deliver the paper and flags to the inpatients. You will have a short period of time to visit the patient’s. Please be sure and thank them for their service.
We have to be in line at the main gate at 0920. The Fayetteville Police Department will escort us to the National Cemetery. The first vehicle will be the flag trailer and truck. Then we can have six motorcycles that are flagged out behind the trailer three motorcycles, two abreast. When we hit Martin Luther King Blvd., those seven components will turn right and continue to follow the escort to Government Street.
The rest of the motorcycles and cars if any will continue down School Street to 11th St. Where we turn right on 11th Street, go to the old sale barn to park.
I am inclosing a couple of attachments. One of them is the program for Memorial Day the other is an invitation to participate, please hand out as many of these as you can this week. The program informs you of the start time, completion and what to expect in between. Please send a small write up about yourself if you are on this program. Sam has requested something so he can introduce you at the podium. This will be very helpful. It means the young ladies with buglers or reading a poem.
I have taking annual leave for Thursday and Friday. Don’t hesitate and get hold of me for chores or information. I was informed I cannot take Tuesday off to be able to help with retrieving the flags at 10 AM.
Sincerely yours,
Raymond Jones 479-409-8058

Karen Rollet-Crocker to present program on landscaping with native plants at 5:30 p.m. today at her home on Mount Sequoyah

Landscaping with Native Plants

Native plants in a landscape help preserve our Ozark identity, provide food for our birds and insects and are well suited to our soils and climate.   Karen Rollet Crocker, recently retired UA professor of landscape architecture, invites us to see how she is using native plants in her home landscape and to hear what she has learned during her years of designing gardens for others, including the native landscape for Compton Gardens and the heritage gardens at Peel Mansion, both in Bentonville.

Crocker’s talk and demonstration on landscaping with native plants is scheduled for  Tuesday, May 10 at 5:30 p.m. at 951 N. Pembroke Road in Fayetteville . The rain date is Tuesday, May 17 at the same time.

Directions:  from Mission Blvd (45) go up the hill on Rockwood Trail (.6 mi).  At the top turn left on Pembroke and go to the first corner on the left side (west side).

Attendees who want starts of native plants are invited to bring a couple of small pots with soil in which to take them home.

The event is free and open to the public.  It is sponsored by the Fayetteville Tree and Landscape Advisory Committee.  For information, call 871-7023.

REGIONAL NATIONAL CEMETERY IMPROVEMENT CORPORATION
P. O. Box 4221
Fayetteville, Arkansas 72702
Minutes from the April 9, 2011 Meeting
The meeting was called to order at 10:30 by President Ron Butler. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Harold Crivello offer the prayer. Minutes of the March meeting were approved. The March treasurer’s report was approved with a March 31, 2011, balance of $123,385.70. A new member, Kate Williams, was introduced and welcomed.
It was determined that the last financial audit was done in July 2010 by Dave Rader. Since he has moved out of state it was agreed that a committee of three be appointed at the May meeting to follow through with this annual audit. Harold Crivello has a couple veterans outside of the present RNCIC membership who have done organizational audits in the past, and he will ask them if they are willing to accept appointment.
Jake Lamkins gave the Web Master’s Report with 1,376 hits since last reporting. He has declined research on Face Book with Jeremy Johns and Ryan Reynolds consenting to research and setup a Face Book page for the RNCIC.
OLD BUSINESS
Ron Butler reported that an offer on Lot #17 (Mahler) was made and accepted with a signed sales contract on April 4 and a closing date of April 22. The cash price is $60,000 with a $9,000 in-kind donation letter from the RNCIC with Mahler clearing the property according to VA specifications. Clearing is already in progress.
An offer was made for Lot #15 (Wilson) of $58,200 cash and a $7,000 in-kind donation letter from the RNCIC. Mr. Wilson’s last asking price was $65,200. At this time the offer is pending. The property is currently rented and will need 60 days to vacate.
Ron Butler stated that as soon as the two lots are purchased and cleared, the RNCIC will start the process of turning the four properties over to the VA. He recommended that we then concentrate on Lots #20 and #20A (Brantley) which have been held for us for quite some time. It is reported that the asking price is $75,750 assessed value for over ¾ acre. With burials moving into recently donated land we must work to raise money to purchase more property as quickly as possible.
The RNCIC Constitution and By-Laws were discussed as well as implementing membership fees. Jake Lamkins will edit the entire content of the Constitution and By-Laws and prepare a draft copy for review and discussion at the May meeting.
The 5K race for November 12, 2011, was discussed, with Wes and Josh going ahead to verify the race date on the racers’ calendar and get forms printed regarding sponsorship. The sponsorship forms are needed in order for members to start solicitation of sponsorships and prize donations. Wes asked if paid advertising should be considered this year.
Ron asked members to consider military and civic groups who could benefit from an RNCIC speaker and consider assigning one month each year for their project donations - as the Fayetteville MOAA group does each June.
Ron mentioned the possibility of setting up a table at the gun show which will be held in Springdale July 2 and 3. It would target a good group, literature could be distributed, and the possibility of having a raffle was mentioned. Further discussion in May.
A draft letter regarding membership was passed around and discussed. This would be incorporated with possible annual fee establishment.
Plans are under way for the Memorial Day ceremony at the Fayetteville National Cemetery. The final meeting is May 7, 10:00 a.m. at the Elks.
NEW BUSINESS
Ron alerted Harold Crivello to the 2010 IRS Form 990-N post card which needs to be mailed by the treasurer. Ron will take care of the Annual Report for Nonprofit Corp. for the State of Arkansas. Nothing is needed for the City of Fayetteville.
Publicity of the RNCIC was discussed for the newspapers, TV, personal appearances, etc. The upcoming purchase of properties and turning the properties over the VA would require recognition.
Ron reminded members that if they have anything to be on next month’s agenda to let him know and it will be included.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:45. The next meeting will be May 14, 2011, 10:30 a.m. at the American Legion Post 27, 1195 So. Curtis Ave., Fayetteville, AR.
